Sterling welcomes Jon Stokes as Artist

Sterling Musical Instruments has welcomed Jon Stokes to its roster of Sterling Virtuoso baritone Artists.

On the baritone, Jon has featured on a variety of television soundtracks including Downtown Abbey and The Twits. He has also performed on various TV adverts, including a prominent ad for Plusnet broadband.

Jon has performed with Callum Au’s Dektette and the Kings Place Jazz Orchestra, displaying the baritone as an improvising voice within the band as well as taking sweeping French horn-style melodies.

Commenting on his new association, Jon said: “In my varied career on the baritone, I’ve owned several instruments but never quite found what I was looking for – until now. The Sterling Virtuoso ticks all the boxes. It’s clear and focused in all registers, as well as being wonderfully in tune.

“The valves are smooth but most importantly, it has the right sound; soaring and majestic, agile and nimble, but with the capability to bite when you need it.

“For me, the baritone is like a better version of a valve trombone, and I relish every opportunity to perform such a fine instrument.”

Also one of the UK’s leading trombone players, Jon is a Rath Artist and has performed with Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones and Seth MacFarlane.

He is a member of the groundbreaking Heritage Orchestra, and is a regular on film and TV sessions, including soundtracks for Wicked and Wonka. Jon is also prolific in London’s West End, having performed in shows such as Gypsy, Singin’ in the Rain and Dreamgirls.

He is a jazz trombone professor at the Royal College of Music in London.
